Asian Handicap Explained: How Handicap Betting Works in Football

The Asian handicap is a football bet that gives one team a start in goals, or a deficit, so the draw drops out. You choose between two sides priced near even money. Half-goal lines settle as a plain win or loss. Whole-goal lines can hand your stake back, and quarter-goal lines split it across the two nearest lines.

In short: a minus line (-1) means your team gives goals, and a plus line (+1) means it receives them. Half-ball lines such as ±0.5 and ±1.5 can never push. Whole-ball lines such as ±1 and ±2 refund the stake when the adjusted score is level. Quarter lines such as ±0.25 and ±0.75 produce half-wins and half-losses. On GGLBET, live handicap bets count the whole match score, including goals scored before you bet.

What is the Asian handicap, and why does it remove the draw?

A standard match bet (1X2) has three outcomes: home win, draw or away win. The Asian handicap adds goals to one side before the match starts. Bookmakers choose the size of that start so each side has close to a 50% chance. As Wikipedia’s entry on the Asian handicap notes, the resulting prices sit near even money, around 1.90 to 2.00.

The draw is a big slice of football. GGLBET priced Brentford v Liverpool (17 October, 22:00 SGT) at 2.38, 3.45 and 2.64 on 12 October 2026. The draw price of 3.45 implies a 29.0% chance. Strip out the bookmaker’s margin (the three prices add up to 108.9%) and it is still about 26.6%. Back either team in the 1X2 market and roughly one result in four goes against you without your team losing.

The handicap also fixes lopsided prices. On the same date GGLBET had Manchester City at 1.21 to beat Ipswich Town, so S$100 returns S$121, a profit of S$21. Ask City to win by two goals instead and the price moves much closer to evens. You are now betting on the margin.

Add the handicap to your team’s score at the end of 90 minutes plus stoppage time. If your team is still ahead, the bet wins. If the adjusted score is level, the stake is refunded. If your team is behind, the bet loses. A quarter line splits the stake into two equal bets on the two nearest lines.

How do you read an Asian handicap line?

Every line is shown from both sides with opposite signs. If the home team is -1, the away team is +1 in the same market. A minus figure means the team gives that many goals. A plus figure means it receives them. Add the figure to your team’s goals at full time and compare the result with the opponent’s goals.

Full time means 90 minutes plus stoppage time. GGLBET’s sportsbook rules settle football match markets on a scheduled 90 minutes of play, which leaves out extra time and penalty shoot-outs. Singapore Pools settles its own handicap at the end of Regulation Time in the same way. A cup tie decided on penalties is settled on the 90-minute score.

Handicap rules talk in balls. GGLBET’s rules describe a team giving or receiving a 0.25 ball start, and call the zero line 0 ball. Quarter lines are written two ways: -0.75 or “-0.5, -1”. Both describe the same bet, with half the stake on each line. GGLBET’s corner rules use that comma style, calling “0.5, 1” a 0.75 handicap. At a neutral venue, GGLBET treats the team listed first as the home team.

What are the four types of Asian handicap line?

Every line belongs to one of four families, and the family decides whether a refund is possible. One note on the numbers that follow. GGLBET’s 12 October 2026 snapshot lists 1X2 prices only, so the handicap prices in the worked examples below are illustrative round figures. The 1X2 prices are the real ones from that date.

The 0 line: draw no bet by another name

The 0 line gives no start to either side. Your team wins and you are paid at the quoted price. The match is drawn and, in the words of GGLBET’s rules, bets are void and stakes refunded. Your team loses and so does the bet.

On 12 October 2026 Brentford were the slight favourites at 2.38 against Liverpool’s 2.64. Put S$100 on Brentford (0) at an illustrative 1.85. A 2-1 home win returns S$185. A 1-1 draw returns your S$100. A Liverpool win costs the full S$100.

Half-ball lines (±0.5, ±1.5): no refunds, ever

Nobody scores half a goal, so a half-ball line ends as a full win or a full loss. Team -0.5 needs any win, which makes it the same bet as a 1X2 win. That is why its price tracks the 1X2 price. Arsenal were 1.53 to win at Nottingham Forest on 12 October 2026, and Arsenal -0.5 settles the same way. Forest +0.5 wins on a Forest win or a draw, which is the double-chance bet in disguise.

Team -1.5 needs a win by two or more. Team +1.5 covers a win, a draw or a one-goal defeat. These lines are the easiest to settle and the only ones where a free bet cannot be wasted on a refund. That matters on GGLBET, because the weekly cashback terms say a free bet that is returned or void counts as lost.

Whole-ball lines (±1, ±2): when the stake comes back

With a whole number, the adjusted score can finish level. That result is a push and the stake comes back in full. GGLBET had Barcelona at 1.38 to win at Real Betis on 12 October 2026. Take Barcelona -1 at an illustrative 1.95 with S$100 on it:

  • Barcelona win by two or more: you are paid S$195.
  • Barcelona win by exactly one: your S$100 comes back with no profit.
  • A draw or a Betis win: you lose the S$100.

Betis +1 in the same market wins on a Betis win or a draw. It refunds on a one-goal Barcelona win and loses if Barcelona win by two or more. The ±2 line works the same way, one goal further out.

Quarter-ball lines (±0.25, ±0.75, ±1.25): split stakes

A quarter line is two bets in one. Your stake is cut into equal halves and placed on the two nearest lines. So -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5, while -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. When the halves settle differently, you get a half-win or a half-loss.

GGLBET’s rules spell it out for -0.75. A win by exactly one goal means half the stake is settled at the price and the other half is refunded. The Singapore Pools football rules print the same rule, with S$100 on England -0.75 at 1.80 paying S$140 after a 1-0 win. The list below puts S$100 at an illustrative 1.90 on each quarter line.

  • Brentford -0.25 and the match is drawn: the 0 half is refunded and the -0.5 half loses. You get S$50 back.
  • Liverpool +0.25 and the match is drawn: the 0 half is refunded and the +0.5 half wins. You get S$95 plus S$50, so S$145.
  • Barcelona -0.75 and they win 2-1: the -0.5 half pays S$95 and the -1 half is refunded. You get S$145.
  • Betis +0.75 and they lose 2-1: half is refunded and half is lost. You get S$50.
  • Any team at -1.25 that wins by one: the -1 half is refunded and the -1.5 half loses. You get S$50.

Asian handicap explained in one table: every line, every margin

This grid is the Asian handicap explained without the prose. Find your line on the left, then read across to the margin your team finished with after 90 minutes. Every line here loses if your team loses by three or more and wins if it wins by three or more. Those two columns are left out. A half win means half the stake wins at the price and half comes back. A half loss means half is lost and half comes back. The rows match Wikipedia’s settlement table and GGLBET’s rules for the 0, 0.25, 0.75 and 1 ball lines.

Lines ending in .25 or .75 produce a half result on one margin only. The plus side of each line mirrors the minus side, so a half win for one bettor is a half loss for the other. Screenshot the grid before you bet. With the Asian handicap explained in one place, you can check any settled slip against it.

What does a S$100 stake return on each result?

Every settlement falls into one of five results. The table uses S$100 at 1.90, a typical even-money handicap price, and shows the working so you can redo it at any price.

ResultWorkingReturnProfit or loss
Full winS$100 × 1.90S$190+S$90

Half lossS$50 backS$50-S$50
LossNothing backS$0-S$100

Now a full example on a lopsided match. Manchester City were 1.21 to beat Ipswich Town on 12 October 2026, with kick-off on 17 October at 22:00 SGT. Suppose the handicap is City -1.75 at an illustrative 1.95 and you stake S$100.

  • City win 3-0 or 4-1: both halves win and you get S$195.
  • City win 2-0 or 3-1: the -1.5 half wins S$97.50 and the -2 half refunds S$50, so you get S$147.50.
  • City win 1-0: both halves lose and you get nothing.

Compare that with the plain win bet at 1.21, which pays S$121 on any City win. The handicap pays more when City win big and nothing when they scrape through. That is the whole trade. Ipswich +1.75 at the same illustrative price is the mirror image. It is a full win unless City win by two or more, S$50 back if City win by exactly two, and a loss beyond that.

Handicap betting: Asian vs European 3-way lines

Handicap betting in football comes in two main forms, and they settle differently on the same scoreline. The Asian form has two outcomes and uses whole, half and quarter goals. The European form, also called the 3-way handicap, uses whole goals only. It keeps the draw as a third outcome, the handicap draw, with its own price.

GGLBET’s sportsbook rules cover both. The rules for the 3-way market settle on the actual score adjusted for the handicap. A level adjusted score is a win for the handicap draw. Take Barcelona winning 1-0 at Betis. On Asian Barcelona -1, the stake comes back. On European Barcelona -1, the bet loses, because the handicap draw wins.

Barcelona -1, final score 2-0Win.Win.

The European version suits a bettor with a firm view on the exact margin. The handicap draw is a third outcome, so it usually pays more than either Asian side. The Asian version suits someone who wants cover on the one-goal result and accepts a lower price for it. Neither form gives the player a built-in edge.

How do Hong Kong and Malay odds show a handicap price?

Handicap prices sit close to even money, so some Asian-facing bookmakers quote them as profit per S$1 staked instead of total return. GGLBET’s prices in this guide are decimal, and so are the examples in the Singapore Pools rules. You will still meet Hong Kong (HK) and Malay odds on other Asian sites and in handicap tables shared online.

HK odds are decimal odds minus 1, so they show the profit on each unit staked. Malay odds match HK odds up to even money. Above even money they turn negative and show the stake needed to win 1. The Odds API’s odds format guide gives the conversion. Below 2.00, Malay equals decimal minus 1. From 2.00 up, Malay equals 1 ÷ (1 – decimal).

DecimalHong KongMalayImplied chanceProfit on S$100
1.800.800.8055.6%S$80
1.850.850.8554.1%S$85
1.900.900.9052.6%S$90
1.950.950.9551.3%S$95

2.101.10-0.9147.6%S$110
2.201.20-0.8345.5%S$120

A Malay price of -0.95 means you risk S$95 to win S$100, the same as decimal 2.05. The minus sign says nothing about the handicap itself. It only tells you the price is above even money. Mixing up the sign of the line and the sign of the price is an easy way to back the wrong side.

How does live Asian handicap betting work?

Live lines move with the clock and the score. A favourite at -1 before kick-off might be offered at -0.5 after a goalless hour, because there is less time left to build a margin. Prices change after goals, red cards and penalties. GGLBET can suspend a market at any time, and bets entered while it is suspended are rejected.

The rule that matters most is which goals count. GGLBET’s sportsbook rules settle live Asian handicap bets on the score-line for the entire game, including goals scored before your bet. The Singapore Pools sports betting FAQ describes the opposite: the score is refreshed to 0-0 when you bet, and only later goals count.

The same line can win under one rule and lose under the other. Say Team A lead 1-0 after 60 minutes, you back Team B +0.5, and the match ends 1-0.

  • With the score reset to 0-0 at bet time, the rest of the match finished 0-0, so Team B +0.5 wins.
  • With the whole match counted, as on GGLBET, Team B lost by one and a half-goal start does not cover it, so the bet loses.

Read that clause before you bet live anywhere. GGLBET’s rules also describe separate Rest of the Match markets, which count only goals scored after your bet. Its 1st and 2nd half handicaps settle on that half alone. For an extra-time handicap, the score at the start of extra time is treated as 0-0.

How to bet on football with the Asian handicap, step by step

Learning how to bet on football with handicaps takes seven checks. Do them in this order. The steps use GGLBET’s sportsbook, which runs in the mobile browser with no app to install.

  1. Open an account on the GGLBET registration page. For the 250% sports welcome offer, claim it in Profile → Promotional Bonuses before your first deposit. No promo code is needed.
  2. Deposit by local bank transfer, PayNow or USDT. The minimum deposit is S$20. Each welcome bonus stage needs S$50 by local bank transfer, and cards are not offered for SGD accounts.
  3. Open Football and pick a match. On 12 October 2026 GGLBET’s feed carried 1,121 football matches, and Brentford v Liverpool alone had 379 markets.
  4. Find the Asian handicap market and read the line from your team’s side. A minus sign means your team gives goals.
  5. Check the price against the chance you need. At 1.90 you must win 52.6% of the bets that do not push just to break even.
  6. Enter the stake and read the potential return. GGLBET’s rules say the Possible Win figure is for information only, and settlement uses the stake at the accepted odds.
  7. Check the official line-ups before kick-off. Where Cash Out is offered and the price has not moved, cashing out a pre-match bet returns your full stake.

For a first handicap bet, a half-ball line is the cleanest choice, as there are only two outcomes to track. Move to quarter lines once the split-stake maths feels routine. For the basics, the football odds guide covers how to bet on football in the 1X2 and over/under markets. It also explains decimal prices and implied chance. Account questions are answered in the GGLBET FAQ.

Which GGLBET promotions fit Asian handicap bets?

Handicap prices near even money clear most minimum-odds rules. Refunds are the problem. GGLBET’s standard promotion rules say void, tied and cancelled wagers do not count towards rollover. A free bet that is returned or void is forfeited. A push on a whole-ball line earns nothing towards a bonus.

PromotionTerms that matter for handicap bets
250% sports welcome100% up to S$1,000, then 150% up to S$1,500 on the second deposit. S$50 minimum deposit per stage, 12x turnover, minimum odds 1.50, 7 days.
Weekly 10% sports cashbackThree or more settled bets a week at 1.30 or higher, S$5 minimum each. You also need a net loss of S$25 or more. Paid as a free bet on Monday at 09:00 (GMT+8), valid 5 days, capped at S$150 to S$500 by VIP level.
Accumulator bonusThree or more selections at 1.30 or higher. The boost runs from 3% for three legs to 100% for 20 or more, and bets made with free bets are excluded.
2 Goals Ahead Early PayoutPre-match only, singles and multiples. A Match Result pick on Team A or Team B is paid as a win once that team leads by two goals.
Cash OutSelected pre-match and in-play events, with full, partial and auto options. The offer equals your stake if the price has not moved.
Edit BetOnly while Cash Out is available on the slip. You can add events, swap events that have not started, or change the stake, but not on free bets.

The early payout terms describe the Match Result market, so do not assume they cover a handicap line. A City -1.75 bet still needs the full-time margin, even if City lead 2-0 at half-time.

For the cashback, the net loss counts settled win and lost bets only, so a refunded whole-ball bet adds nothing to it. If you plan to use the Monday free bet on a handicap, pick a half-ball line, since a push would forfeit it. Full terms are on the promotions page, and the levels are explained on the VIP page.

What moves an Asian handicap line, and what should not move you?

Lines move for two reasons: new information and the weight of money. Team news is the biggest piece of information. A missing first-choice striker or goalkeeper can shift a favourite from -1 to -0.75. Sometimes the line stays put and the price on -1 drifts from 1.90 to 2.05 instead.

A quarter-goal move is a large change. Look back at the settlement table: going from -1 to -0.75 turns a one-goal win from a refund into a half win. If you took -0.75 early and the line later moved to -1, you hold the better number on that one result. Writing down the exact line and price you took makes these comparisons possible later.

Some things should not move you at all. A team’s long winning run is already in the price. A tip in a chat group rarely tells the market anything new. Chasing yesterday’s losses with a bigger stake changes nothing about the next match either.

No staking plan beats the bookmaker’s margin. Two prices of 1.90 on the same line add up to 105.3% in implied chance, a margin of about 5% across both sides. The 1X2 market on Brentford v Liverpool added up to 108.9% on 12 October 2026. A lower margin makes the handicap a cheaper bet than the 1X2, but it is still a bet you are expected to lose over time. No line or system guarantees a profit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Asian handicap the same as draw no bet?

Only the 0 line is. Asian handicap 0 refunds the stake on a draw and pays the quoted price on a win, which is how draw no bet works. Every other line moves the start away from zero.

What does -0.75 mean in an Asian handicap?

Your stake is split equally between -0.5 and -1. The team must win by two or more for a full win. A one-goal win gives a half win, so S$100 at 1.90 returns S$145. A draw or a defeat loses the whole stake.

Do goals in extra time count for an Asian handicap bet?

No. Standard handicap markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, under GGLBET’s rules and under Singapore Pools’ Regulation Time rule. Extra time only counts in markets built for it, such as an extra-time handicap that starts from 0-0. Penalty shoot-outs never count.

What happens to a handicap bet if the match is abandoned?

Under GGLBET’s rules, a match abandoned before 90 minutes is void unless the market is already decided. A postponed match is void if it is not replayed or rescheduled within 24 hours of the original start. Void stakes are returned.

Can I add Asian handicap lines to an accumulator?

Yes. GGLBET’s rules say a void leg is removed and the multiple is settled on the remaining selections. A common convention values a half-won leg at (odds + 1) ÷ 2 and a half-lost leg at 0.5. Check the settled slip in your bet history to see how yours was valued. Each leg needs odds of 1.30 or more to count for the accumulator bonus.

Does the 2 Goals Ahead Early Payout cover handicap bets?

The published terms describe pre-match Match Result bets on Team A or Team B, in singles or multiples. Handicap lines are not mentioned, so expect a handicap bet to settle on the full-time score. Draw picks are excluded from the early payout too.

Is Asian handicap betting legal in Singapore?

Singapore Pools offers an Asian handicap to its online account holders. GGLBET is an offshore operator. It is not licensed by Singapore’s Gambling Regulatory Authority, and under the Gambling Control Act 2022 gambling with a remote operator that is not licensed in Singapore is an offence.

Which handicap line suits a beginner?

If you are still learning how to bet on football, start with 0 or a half-ball line such as -0.5 or +0.5. Those settle as a plain win, loss or refund, so you can check each result against the table without split-stake maths. Quarter lines make more sense once you have a view on exact goal margins.
